A device from a German company could switch off electricity on rooftop solar panels during fires, writes Tom Lombardo. A small, cylindrical fuse from TOPinno GMBH could prevent solar panels from sending electricity to nearby wires when its "solder-like" adhesive breaks down during excessive heat. This would make rooftop solar panels safer for firefighters, but it remains to be seen whether manufacturers will include it in the production of photovoltaic panels, Lombardo notes.
