The American College of Physicians has released recommendations, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, for treating anemia in patients with heart disease. Researchers recommend restrictive use of red blood cell transfusion in hospitalized patients with coronary heart disease and discourage the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in patients with mild to moderate anemia and congestive heart failure or coronary heart disease due to lack of proven benefit and increased risk of venous thromboembolism and death.
