A handful of solar startups are bringing renewable options to the residential market, but thanks to a lack of proven revenue models, retail electricity providers have been slow to join them. According to research firm DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability, by turning to smart meters, REPs can gain real-time insight into when and how solar installations are impacting their bottom line, making it possible to maximize their profitability. "The smart meters are key to this because the real-time information is crucial," said Soner Kanlier, a vice president at the company.
