The FDA revision of language on areas of the FSMA Act that impact the fresh-produce industry and its extension of the comments period to March 31, 2014, have been applauded by the industry, including the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, American Feed Industry Association and others. The provisions under revision impact water-quality standards and testing, mixed-use facilities and procedures for withdrawing qualified exemptions for farms. “We believe that this decision to change these proposed rules -- in response to the careful consideration of many people involved in supplying our food -- is critical to fulfilling our commitment to getting them right,” blogged Michael Taylor, FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine, after the announcement.
