Fifth-graders at a Syracuse, N.Y., school developed a fundraising project for a local food pantry during a class reading unit called "Doing the Right Thing." The students, many of whose families use the food pantry, organized bake sales and fundraisers during nonclass hours and presented a check, baked treats and handmade cards. "We had multiple discussions about doing the right thing in the community and doing the right thing in life," teacher Merritt Kusak-McGuire said.
