An ecosystem of plastic waste is growing in the ocean, and scientists worry that as the plastic breaks down it may cause dangerous chemicals to spread through the water. This "plastisphere" introduces harmful bacteria to new regions of the world as they hitch a ride on plastic flotsam that doesn't dissipate in the water. "Each one of these plastic bits is a circle of life," said marine geochemist Tracy Mincer.
