Controversial topics can be addressed with care in the classroom, writes Dawn Casey-Rowe, a social studies teacher from Rhode Island. In this blog post, she offers 10 online resources to help teachers cover topics, including swastikas, hate crimes and abortion. When addressed properly, teaching about controversial subjects can "create a tone of tolerance and respect where each student understands that their beliefs are important, but that they can also learn to understand the beliefs of others...," she writes.
