Plastic surgeon Craig Birgfeld performed facial reanimation surgery on an 11-year-old boy with CHARGE syndrome, a rare disorder affecting cranial nerve function. The boy could not move either side of his face and used sign language to indicate he wanted surgery. The operation involved taking muscle from the boy's chest and affixing one end to the cheekbone and the other to the corner of the mouth, as well as attaching tiny blood vessels to the muscle.
