Florida podiatrist Howard Umansky has founded Mobile Health, which makes home visits to diabetic podiatry patients who can't easily travel, and the Diabetes Rural Outreach Project, which uses smartphone applications and other technology to track foot conditions. Through the programs, medical personnel can review smartphone photos of foot wounds, while other apps can measure skin temperature around a wound. "The earlier we can detect it, the earlier we can treat it. If we treat it, we can prevent gangrene, and we can prevent amputation," Umansky said.
