Researchers at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in India have created a new strategy for oral insulin delivery by packing the hormone in liposomes, which were then coated with polyelectrolytes to help protect the insulin from the digestive tract. Data showed the new "insulin pill" was nearly as effective as insulin injections in reducing blood glucose levels in animal models. The findings were published in the journal Biomacromolecules.
