Santa Claus only received his moniker in 1863, but the idea of someone bringing gifts to children in the dead of winter has been around far longer. In Norse mythology, Odin would bring gifts to children who filled their shoes with hay for his horse; that role shifted to St. Nicholas as Europe became Christianized, leading to the gradual evolution of the red-suited Santa figure we know today.
