Science is learned by doing, not by memorizing facts from a textbook, writes cancer researcher Jack Andraka, a junior in high school. Andraka learned to love science as a toddler and has watched with dismay as his high school peers lost interest. He believes the problem is rooted in teaching methods that "consist of banal consumption and regurgitation of facts. ... [T]his model for science education is simply not effective because it skews students' perception of what science truly is," Andraka writes.
