Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., is piloting a residency program for its teacher candidates based on the medical-school model. Teacher candidates spend an entire year working in schools through a "residency" by co-teaching with mentor teachers and attending with them the same student-assessment, faculty and professional-development meetings. "There's an idealistic and a realistic experience, and, here, you really get to see what challenges teachers face," teacher candidate Lisa Hunt said.
