Starbucks has avoided franchising in the U.S. and other markets in an effort to keep control over its brand, but the Seattle-based coffee giant has become more flexible in Europe as it looks to grow beyond the big cities. The company opened its first-ever franchise store in the U.K. village of Liphook in February; it now has nine U.K. franchisees operating 45 stores and plans to introduce a franchise program in France soon.
