Some patients with irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia also showed clinical signs associated with celiac disease, Spanish researchers reported. Data showed about 30% of patients with IBS and fibromyalgia had a family history of celiac disease, and patients saw symptom improvement using a gluten-free diet. The study teams wrote that the case study indicates "some of the misdiagnosed IBS/FMS cases could suffer from an underlying CD, which can contribute to the IBS and FMS symptoms, development and maintenance."
