The use of ultrasound for screening children with suspected appendicitis rose between 2005 and 2011, but the increase was not tied to more cases of complicated appendicitis or longer hospital stays, a study showed. Aside from being as effective as computed tomography in detecting childhood appendicitis, ultrasound imaging lowers children's exposure to radiation, researchers reported in the American Journal of Roentgenology.
