Instructional coach David Ginsburg writes in this blog post that offering students rewards for complying with classroom rules does not teach them how to behave and can discourage some students. Instead, he writes, he saw dramatic improvement in student behavior and achievement when he empowered students by giving them "choices" and "voices" about what happens in their classroom. "These kids need confidence, not candy," he writes.
