New research is providing more evidence for a link between climate change and the increasing severity of wildfires in the Western U.S. "Total area burned, number of fires and the size of the largest fires are all increasing," University of Utah geographer Philip Dennison said. The research team used satellite data to study some 6,000 fires dating back to 1984. However, Dennison cautioned that it is not possible to "say for certain whether climate change is behind the trends we're seeing."
