About one-quarter of China's 200 million installed smart meters have the bidirectional technology that marks a truly smart meter, Iain Morris writes. That state of affairs is because of change in the near future, according to ABI Research. "Existing meter specifications have ensured meters deployed over the past five years can be upgraded to support bidirectional connectivity," ABI's Jonathan Collins says. "This combined with a recent commitment to consider wireless as well as [power line communications] connectivity means there is a growing opportunity for existing and new connectivity hardware providers."
