The U.K.-based research facility that gave the world radar and packet switching has completed a major network modernization project that includes a 10 Gbps IT backbone capable of meeting its data-intensive research needs. As part of the upgrade, the National Physical Laboratory deployed Gigabit Ethernet products from Alcatel-Lucent -- including components from the company's OmniSwitch suite -- to support a network with 3,500 wired end points.
