Boston Children's Hospital pediatric cardiac surgeons issued a warning to colleagues regarding the early failure of Sorin's Mitroflow bioprosthetic valve used in the aortic position in children and young adults. The valve is failing about three years sooner than its expected failure rate, and the progression is rapid and deadly if not caught in time. BCH surgeons recommend evaluating patients with the valve every four to six months to catch failures before they become catastrophic, and the American Society of Echocardiography passed a warning along to its members regarding the situation.
