A Congressional committee has issued a report criticizing working conditions for part-time instructors at U.S. colleges and universities. The House Education and the Workforce Committee surveyed about 845 adjunct instructors from 41 states and found that most fell below the poverty line for a family of four, and that many institutions were restricting adjuncts' hours to avoid paying benefits under the Affordable Care Act. The report calls for "increased budget transparency" from schools to help in "understanding the nature and necessity of this now-pervasive labor practice and whether and how it may be changed."
