A proliferation of new and sophisticated cyberthreats coupled with a shortage of people with the expertise to combat them has raised salaries for top-tier cybersecurity professionals over the past two years, with average base pay for chief information security officers doubling in some cases, IT recruiters say. According to Shawn Banerji, managing director of the information officers practice at Russell Reynolds Associates, it's not uncommon for CISOs -- who were once simply drawn from the ranks of qualified IT employees -- to demand as much as $1 million a year to keep enterprise networks safe from attack.
