Seismic sensors installed on existing networks of GPS stations in California are part of an early warning project being tested there. The goal is to alert residents of impending earthquakes, tsunamis and floods; it's already successfully alerted emergency service teams about the risk of flash floods. "This can help to mitigate threats to public safety," said Yehuda Bock from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
