Big-box stores and discount retailers continue to threaten supermarkets because they offer low prices and have expanded grocery sections, experts say. However, supermarkets are staying competitive by boosting private-label offerings, which command the highest share in grocery, says Susan Viamari, editor of Times & Trends. Supermarkets accounted for nearly 50% of grocery sales in 2012, but the channel is expected to lose 2 percentage points to increased competition during the next five years, according to Mintel.
