First responders faced with frigid temperatures this week are taking extra precautions when responding to calls, adding crew members on trucks and ambulances, using portable heaters and working to ensure their equipment functions properly in the cold. Navigating snow-covered roads and icy sidewalks and driveways also is a problem. Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams in Michigan said firetrucks are being used to get snowbound people from their homes to an ambulance, and some residents are calling 9-1-1 because they are unable to drive themselves to the hospital.
