Fecal microbiota transplant pioneer Dr. Lawrence Brandt says as many as 75 physicians now perform the procedure to cure chronic Clostridium difficile infection, and he says patients who suffer with recurrent bouts of illness "don't bat an eyelash when you tell them what you're going to do." The healthy stool transplant, designed to restore bacterial balance in the gastrointestinal system, has a 92% cure rate, data show, and is even used in children. Brandt has performed 150 FMT procedures, and insurers have started covering the treatment.
