A ancient quasar has illuminated a gas cloud 10 times the diameter of the Milky Way, possibly the largest ever seen in the universe. University of California at Santa Cruz astronomers Sebastiano Cantalupo and Xavier Prochaska say the cloud, observed using the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, could be a portion of filament of a cosmic web that connects galaxies. The gas cloud measures 1.5 million light-years in length, according to the study published online in Nature.
