Wine bottles with screw caps are no longer considered subpar as high-end wineries increasingly use the easy twist-off cap in place of cork to preserve freshness, writes Allison Aubrey. Corks are still being used in full-bodied wines that use the oxygen the cork allows in the bottle to improve its flavor, but wines meant to be drunk young fare better with twist-off tops, said Dave McIntyre, a wine writer for The Washington Post.
