A massive holiday malware campaign that sent thousands of spam messages to businesses and consumers around the world is being attributed to what researchers say is the first recorded hacking of "smart" appliances. Experts from Proofpoint say more than 750,000 e-mails were sent through devices, including at least one connected refrigerator, adding that a lack of knowledge about how the devices work leaves many appliances completely exposed to attack.
