Representatives of the transportation industry, states and cities testified before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's first meeting to consider reauthorization of federal surface transportation programs. They urged Congress to not delay reauthorization, saying that doing so could put off existing projects and affect local economies. "I would ask that you get a six-year bill because a two-year bill is not very helpful to us," Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said. Meanwhile, the committee's chairman, Bill Shuster, R-Pa., said he hoped to have a new legislation ready by August.
