The Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accounts' annual member survey about the strangest tax deductions requested by clients reveals some imaginative entries. Among the proposals are pets as dependents, wedding rings and an all-terrain vehicle as a medical deduction because it supposedly provides stress relief.
Appliance and electronics retailer HHGregg is reporting a 71% profit drop for its fiscal third quarter as compared to the same period last year. The company cited weaker than expected sales in the computer and wireless products categories, and a decision to avoid deep discounts on electronics for the result. In a statement, CEO Dennis May said this drop further justifies a refocus on a wider range of housewares.
The recruitment of Josh Katz -- responsible for the interactive graphic "How Y’all, Youse, and You Guys Talk" on NYTimes.com last year -- offers a road map of how to use online resources to find talent, Steve Boese writes. "Katz didn't apply online or get discovered via a resume at a campus event -- the Times found him by understanding where people with his skills were likely to be active, and likely to post examples of their work," Boese writes.
