A group of plaintiffs from West Virginia is suing Eastman Chemical over the contamination of the Elk River by a coal-processing chemical. The chemical spill left about 300,000 residents without the ability to use tap water. The plaintiffs say Eastman, which produces the chemical, did not disclose its carcinogenic properties. An Eastman Chemical spokeswoman said that the suit was baseless and that the company doesn't know of any research suggesting the chemical is carcinogenic. Freedom Industries and American Water Co. in West Virginia were also named in the suit.
