The National Science Foundation has given an engineer with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee a $400,000 grant to study the effects of disposing next-generation lithium ion batteries. "We want to develop an environmentally benign lithium-ion battery for future electric vehicles," said assistant professor of mechanical engineering Chris Yingchun Yuan. The research will study emissions and ways the batteries can be disposed of or recycled while removing nanomaterials without affecting the environment.
