Recent claims by Action on Sugar campaign group stating that eating sugar is as bad for you as smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol have been debunked by nutrition experts. "I just don't think the analogy between sugar and tobacco is an appropriate one," said Andrew Lansley, former U.K. health secretary and current Commons Leader. "I think we have to understand that sugar is an essential component of food, it's just that sugar in excess in an inappropriate and unhelpful diet." Other experts cited that consumption of sugar has been steadily declining since the 1960s.
