In an analysis of data on almost 140,000 1- to 18-year-olds who underwent a tonsillectomy, researchers found 8% of them had to go back to the hospital within 30 days of the procedure, mostly due to bleeding. The rates of dexamethasone administration on the day of the surgery, as recommended, ranged from 0.3% to 98.8%. Although antibiotics are not recommended, 31.1% of the patients received them, according to the study in the journal Pediatrics.
