Fixed or retractable roofs have been absent from most stadiums across the country because they can be expensive and challenging to build, according to this article. Retractable roofs are 600 feet to 800 feet long, require steel and cables for support and cost between $100 million to $150 million for an open stadium -- and add $25 million to $40 million in the cost of an enclosed arena -- said Mark Waggoner, principal of an engineering firm in Houston. Fixed roofs appear in some southern stadiums because they can be more comfortable in warm weather, Waggoner said.
