Same-day PCI discharge has proven advantageous to low-risk patients and efficient for medical centers, say interventional cardiologists who pioneered the trend. SCAI fellows Dr. Michael Kim and Dr. Ehtisham Mahmud were able to make the case at their institutions that the approach is safe and popular with patients while opening up needed hospital beds. The new "Two Midnight Rule" is likely to further encourage same-day discharges, said Kim. "It will affect the bottom line of the hospital budget to do PCI because for the most part, only rarely will PCI be reimbursed as an inpatient reimbursement fee.”
