Some students at an elementary school in Arizona are learning about units of measurement and how to calculate time while maintaining a school garden, part of a larger ecology project. Students also are learning geometry by designing a habitat for the school's desert tortoise. "Instead of closing our math books at the end of counting-problem exercises, we go and count how many seeds have germinated or how many new leaves a plant has, and that makes the lessons stick," first-grade teacher Angela Moore said.
