English language learners who received additional math instruction using word problems with tiered levels of language difficulty showed improved math skills after five weeks of participating in the program, according to a recent study. "If they don't get the language and reading when they are young, by the time they get to middle school they are going to be lost in math class," said Michael Orosco, an assistant professor at the University of California, Riverside who led the study.
