A study in the journal Medical Care of emergency departments in California and Florida found that hospital EDs not linked to a health information exchange are more likely to repeat CT scans, chest X-rays and ultrasounds than those that are connected to an HIE. Researchers concluded that California and Florida could cut their imaging costs by $3 million every year if all of the hospital EDs in those states were connected to HIEs.
