Lawmakers in Virginia are considering a proposal to eliminate statewide social studies tests in elementary grades, along with many other exams, to allow more time for reading and math instruction. If approved, students would take 26 exams in K-12 grades -- down from 34. However, some officials are questioning the decision to eliminate social studies exams, saying it could lessen schools' focus on civics and Virginia history.
