Are falls in dementia patients an accidental event, or are they clinical manifestations of white matter lesions (WMLs)? An MRI could help identify WMLs in those with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, and this could help diagnose those that are at higher risk of falling. A Japanese study compared those who fell to those who had not fallen in the previous year and found the fallers had more WMLs than nonfallers. (Free abstract only.)
