Management thinkers see modern leaders as part of "Generation Flux," a "nomadic" group that flits among jobs and geographies, INSEAD professor Gianpiero Petriglieri says. That flexibility has its merits but also makes it hard for employees to trust the commitment of these leaders, he says. "How do you keep a sense of roots and a sense of connection? Well, cultivate. Cultivate those connections," Petriglieri says. "And cultivate three kinds of connections -- connections to people, connections to places, and connections to purpose."
