Before having a colonoscopy ask the gastroenterologist about his detection rate for precancerous polyps or how many procedures he performs per day, as a way to judge experience, say Drs. Jim Sears and Travis Stork, who offer tips after having their own colorectal cancer checks. They say patients can follow a liquid diet several days before the procedure to relieve constipation and can ask the physician to "de-bloat" or remove any air injected into the colon after the procedure. Also, splitting the bowel preparation in half, taking part the evening before and part the morning of the colonoscopy, is becoming more common, says ACG President Dr. Harry Sarles.
