The duration of second-stage labor was more than two hours longer with epidural anesthesia than without, according to a U.S. study that examined data involving more than 42,000 women. "The effect of epidural can be longer than we think and as long as the baby looks good and the women are making progress, we don't necessarily have to intervene (and perform a Cesarean section) based on the passage of time," lead author Dr. Yvonne Cheng said. The findings appear in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.
