Veterinarian Bradford Bentz points out that the signs of colic in horses aren't always easy to identify. Owners are the experts on their horse's temperament, Dr. Bentz writes, so their observations of possible abdominal discomfort are important clues for a veterinarian evaluating the animal. Dr. Bentz outlines signs of mild, moderate and severe abdominal pain in horses but emphasizes that individual horses may manifest some indications of all three while very stoic animals may show very little sign of pain.
