With tangerines, people want convenience such as easy peeling, while with grapefruit and pomelo, they care more about the fruit's flavor and juice content, says Peter Chaires, executive director of New Varieties Development & Management. New Varieties works with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Florida to develop citrus-breeding programs, and Chaires says retailers can expect to see new kinds of citrus in the next few years.
