Premier said its waste index, designed to help hospitals figure savings generated by 15 efficiency measures, has led to lower spending through reduced readmissions, improved productivity, fewer lab tests and avoided surgical safety events. Adventist Health System vice president Ekta Punwani said while the index provides a high-level view of potential savings, costs are not always the deciding factor, and if physicians decide a more expensive treatment is warranted patients "will absolutely get it."
