Hyperspectral imaging in the operating room can help reduce the risk of revision surgery or amputation by showing what tissue needs to be removed, Javier La Fontaine, associate professor of plastic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, said at a recent symposium. "It lets us more comfortably address the severity of the wound infection," La Fontaine said. HSI can prevent amputation by showing that there is a smaller amount of infected tissue than suspected and can reduce the need for follow-up surgery by highlighting all the infected or necrotic tissue, he said.
